For the 2017-2018 school year, students are able to choose an artistic path they would like to take. Grades 6-8 offerings are different quarterly. The classes are as follows:
Quarter 1 - Drawing and Painting
Quarter 2 - 3D Design
Quarter 3 - Mixed Media
Quarter 4 - Portfolio Design
Materials and projects will be different quarterly, so if you have two children in different classes, they will have different projects. If you would like more clarification, or would like to reach out, to hear what your student will be learning about, please feel free to email me.
Sixth Through Eighth Grade Syllabus
Course Description
Students will learn about art history, as well as the art elements and principles of design. My students will learn the essential vocabulary of art, to gain the knowledge and skills to communicate their ideas. As well as learning about art that has been created in the past, to understand and see how art is a form of conversation. Students will be completing self-assessments, as well as participating in informal and formal critiques, to exercise their knowledge of art.

Outline for the Year
We will explore many materials throughout the year, some of which are graphite, sharpies, paint, mixed media, and clay. During this time we will study different art styles, artists, and learn how to critique other’s artwork in a responsible manner. In most if not all cases, artwork will remain in the classroom for the entirety of the year. If you are moving, please let me know and I will let your student take it home with them on one of their last days.

Objectives
  • The learner will understand the processes and procedures presented.
  • The students will be able to communicate effectively using proper art vocabulary.
  • Students will meet the criteria of all projects (completing actions such as: preliminary sketches, reflections, worksheets, self-assessments, speaking during critiques, and completion projects.)
  • The student will demonstrate the proper use and clean up of materials.

Expected Learning Outcomes
  • Students are expected to be working in class everyday with maximum effort.
  • There is a respect policy in regard to work done in this class. You may look at others' art, but please do not touch it.
  • During critiques, feedback will be positive and worthwhile.
  • Follow the rules and expectations provided in the handbook, as well as the general classroom rules.

Website
www.ArtMsNieman.com will be used throughout the school year. No names or any other discrediting information will be shared. This site is to keep you informed of the happenings in the art classroom, as well as showing you student work (both in progress and completed), as well as artist inspirations.

Grading Policy
Students will be graded on participation every time we meet to ensure the student is on task for the entire class time.
Projects     60%
Participation    40%
Projects are considered unfinished until their self-assessment is completed and passed in with their art piece. Students are always welcome to rework their pieces once the teacher evaluation is complete. In these I will grade students on a one to five scale (five being the student met the standards for that particular portion) and will consist of comments and suggestions for if the student is willing to rework the piece. There will be at least one ‘test’ which will count as a project grade.
Participation grades will be given daily. Students will earn a 3 if they are on task and working diligently the whole class time. A 2 is earned if the student was off task for half of the class time, distracting themselves, and/or their peers. A 1 is earned when a student works for a fourth of the time. There are also half points distributed depending on the student’s effort for the day. Students will be exempt from a grade if they are absent that day.

Homework
Homework for this class will consist of collecting images (to reference for an art piece) or items to bring into class (for projects such as still lives.) Occasionally students will need to finish assignments at home. This is not considered a homework assignment, but a project grade as it was assigned during class. Homework will not be assigned frequently, but on an as needed basis (approximately once per quarter.)
